Moist heat effective for N95 Decontamination

Thermal disinfection (60 min @ 70C) successfully decontaminated N95 respirators without impairing structural integrity or function. This process could be used in hospitals and long-term care facilities with commonly available equipment to mitigate the depletion of N95 masks.

Dr. Peter P. Tsai, inventor of the electrostatic charging technology that makes the filter media of face masks including medical and N95, answers questions about N95 reuse. Avoid alcohol, but dry heat (65C for 30 min), steam and boiling water for 3 minutes work. UV possible, but needs testing.

Virus deactivation with SALT

Dr. Fu-Shi Quan published an article in 2017 Nature regarding deactivation of influenza virus with salt, leading to possible mask reuse. Not strictly DIY, but methods describe pre-treating with NaCl, distilled water and Tween 20 (polysorb 20) as surfactant.
